2013 Horse Feeding and Product Guide from Southern States
Older horses have special feed requirements.
Higher nutrient content in the feed compensates for a less than effective digestive system. Senior feeds contain a higher fat content which provides the extra energy for an elderly horse. The feed needs to be more easily digested because older horses teeth are worn or gone. Some senior horses with dental problems may need to have a feed that can be mixed with water to form a mash. They also need more fiber in their feed because they can’t process hay or pasture grass.
